Thefts from Unlocked Vehicles
The Mayville Police Department has received 30 complaints of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the last two months. The thefts are all reach-and-grab-type incidents, as only movable objects are taken, such as GPS units, iPods, change, sunglasses, purses and wallets. Interior components such as car stereos are not being touched. The thefts occur whether the cars are parked on the street or on the owner's property. Police are urging citizens to lock their vehicle when it is left unattended and to report any suspicious persons or vehicles in their neighborhood.
Police recently arrested a 22 year old man from West Bend who had been stealing items from unlocked vehicles in the Seitz Avenue area. Smaller communities become targets due to the trusting nature of the citizens.
A simple deterrent would be to lock your vehicle when it is unoccupied. Never leave your wallet or purse in your vehicle and even though your vehicle is parked in your driveway, never leave your car keys in your vehicle.
