Are Bicycles Subject to Traffic Laws?

Posted April 10, 2010

That is a question that comes up quite frequently and the answer is Yes! Bicycles are subject to the same rules and regulations as any other vehicle on the road. In fact, under Wisconsin Statute, a bicycle is defined as a legal vehicle whose operator is required to follow all traffic laws. This means stopping for stop signs and red lights if traveling in the street and riding on the same side of the road as other traffic that is going in the same direction. So before you get on your bicycle, make sure that both you and your bike are safe and secure and that you know the rules of biking. While there are too many rules pertaining to bicycles to list here, I will mention a few of the frequently violated laws.

A bicycle rider can be issued a citation for failing to stop at a stop sign or a traffic control signal.

Bicycle riders must ride in the direction of traffic.

A bicycle rider can be issued a citation for riding their bicycle on a sidewalk. Mayville City Ordinance 397-14(I)(2) states, “No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk”.

All bicycles in the City must be registered. Mayville City Ordinance 397-14(B) briefly states: “It is unlawful for any person to operate a bicycle owned by a resident of the City or kept in the City upon any City street unless the bicycle is properly registered and licensed”.

To learn more about bicycle safety and have your child fitted for a bicycle helmet, or to simply register your family bicycles, the 2009 Bicycle Rodeo Safety Class will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Mayville TAG Center.
