Mayville Police K9 “Frankie” diagnosed with terminal cancer.

On Sunday, June 20th, Mayville Police Departments nine-year old German Shepherd K9 Frankie underwent a life-saving surgery. His handler, Officer Ryan Vossekuil noticed that K9 Frankie was lethargic, breathing heavy and refusing food. After consulting with the Mayville Animal Clinic, K9 Frankie was rushed to the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center in Waukesha where he underwent emergency surgery. During surgery it was determined that Frankie had a tumor on his spleen which had ruptured. The spleen was removed and sent in for pathology testing.

The pathology results indicated that Frankie has Hemangiosarcoma, an agreesive and fast growing cancer. There is no known cause for this cancer and it is untreatable. Frankie’s surgeon gave Frankie a life span of two to eight weeks.

K9 Frankie began his career with the Mayville Police Department in September 2003 and was actively working up to the time of the surgery. Frankie is currently at his home with Officer Vossekuil. Frankie remains in good spirits and is spending time with his family.
