The State of Wisconsin defines certain modes of electric
transportation. Some see Electric modes of transportation
a great opportunity to save on gas and help the environment.
But some types of electric and gas powered vehicles
are not legal to operate on City streets.

What is Legal?
According to the State of Wisconsin, Motorized Bicycles
which is defined into two categories under Wis.Stats.
340.01(30),
340.01(30)(a) a bicycle which has a power unit, that
is not an integral part of the bicycle, that has been
added to permit the bicycle to travel at a speed of
not more than 30 miles per hour with a 150-pound rider
on a dry, level, hard surface with no wind and having
a seat for the operator.
340.01(30)(b) a bicycle that has fully operative
pedals and has an electric motor of less than 750
watts and is capable, when powered solely by the motor,
of a speed of less than 20 miles per hour with a 170
pound rider on a dry, level, hard surface with no
wind. Below are examples of motorized bicycles that
are legal to operate on the roadway.
343.05(3)(c); No person may operate a moped or motor
bicycle unless the person possesses a valid operator's
license.

What is not Legal?
As picured below, the cooler cruizers, electric mopeds
and stand-up scooters with motors attached are not
legal to operate on the roadway.
