K9 Unit

K9 "Frankie"
was born on March 24, 2001 in Germany, and imported to the United States. He was purchased through Steinig Tal Kennel of Campbellsport a supplier of highly trained canines, and is trained for bark and hold techniques with strong obedience and social skills.

The K9 program was made possible by the assistance of the Mayville Police Citizens Academy Alumni and the support if the Mayville Citizens who donated to the K9 program.

The K9 program is funded entirely from donations, so the Mayville Police Department and Officer Vossekuil will continue with fundraisers throughout the year to help keep the program going.

The K9 is utilized for:

  • Drug detection;
  • Vehicle searches;
  • Working with the school administration and drug deterrence programs;
  • Building searches;
  • Tracking and searching for lost individuals;
  • Tracking and apprehension of criminal suspects;
  • Officer protection;
  • Evidence search and recovery;
  • Public relations;
  • Support for EMS and the fire department.

The K9 is available for call out for the Mayville Police Department as well as surrounding agencies.

Officer Vossekuil and K9 Frankie would like to thank all of the community members, businesses, and organizations that have donated to our K9 Unit. Monetary donations are maintained in a special account that is used only for K9 Frankie’s equipment and to maintain a balance to pay for any unforeseen veterinary bills, medications, etc.

A highly trained police canine is an effective tool in law enforcement. Dogs have an acute sense of smell – much better than humans. They can sniff out suspects, locate lost and missing persons, or detect where illegal narcotics are hidden. Canines are also effective in assisting officers with searching residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
